At a time when it seems everything is becoming more expensive, the South Carolina legislature is looking to give firearm enthusiasts something to ease the pain – a two-day tax-free holiday.
Starting the day after Thanksgiving, South Carolinians will take part in the first ever Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday. It is set to begin at 12:01 on Nov. 28 and continues through 11:59 p.m. Nov. 29. Not that most sporting goods stores are open at 12:00 a.m., but it is nice to know if you are out and about and come across an all-night gun sale in your neighborhood.
According to the South Carolina Department of Revenue, only purchases of fixed-cartridge handguns, shotguns and rifles will be included in the items that will be tax-free.
Luckily for many gun dealers the slow market woes have missed their mark when aimed at their businesses. With a new changing of the guard in the White House and an economic downturn in our nation, gun sales have been on the rise in the U.S. – ten percent in October.
Skip Gilmer, owner of Ammo Plus in Anderson, S.C., is looking forward to the tax-free holiday.
“Obviously, the tax-free weekend will be an incentive for buyers, and we are looking forward to seeing a bit more foot traffic over the weekend of Nov. 28 and 29,” Gilmer says.
Hopefully more states will see the light and pass similar legislation helping responsible citizens acquire firearms for just a little bit cheaper. When put into numerical data, the purchase of a thousand-dollar shotgun would save you around 80 bucks – just enough to pay for a day on the range, all compliments of Uncle Sam.
